As many of you know, I am no stranger to adversity, but, like many small business owners I might not have been entirely prepared for a global pandemic. On March 16, Maryland’s Governor Hogan ordered all bars, restaurants, other recreational businesses to close. He also prohibited events and gatherings of over 50 people. Fortunately, the Bagelry was allowed to remain open for takeout orders, but no one was allowed to eat in the shop. We encouraged people to order online for safety and convenience and we decreased our hours.

As cases of the Coronavirus continued to increase, we decided to close the store on April 2 to replace our oven. However, it turned out to be more complicated than we anticipated and the store remained closed until May 2! However, it turned out that this was the perfect time to close down and upgrade our facilities. Online orders had slowed, people were being very cautious about going out so using this time to close wasn’t a huge risk (as compared to closing during a normal time period). We kept our customers updated on our progress and our community was eager for us to re-open, which was comforting. Once we reopened (for online orders and pick up only) we were able to provide better bagels (thanks to our new oven) and were greeted by a bevy of bagel lovers!

By this time, Maryland Health officials were now recommending that people wear cloth masks when they have to leave the house, so we were requiring that all customers and employees wear masks inside the shop. Most people complied, but it was stressful for our staff to ask customers to wear a mask or leave.

Despite these challenges, sales remained steady. Things were definitely different — we missed our regular customers — students who would have regularly visited our shop after school or families who would gather on Saturday mornings. However, we’re one of the lucky ones. Restaurant Association of Maryland predicted that 25% of restaurants in the state would need to close for good. By summer, that number was estimated to be around 35% or even 40%.

The Georgetown Bagelry has alway been agile — we face challenges head on and pride ourselves on being transparent with our customers. As a result, we’ve been able to adapt and evolve as necessary. Whether it’s a water heater that needs to be replaced in the middle of the day and having to close down the shop or having to collaborate with neighbors to store our dough during a summer derecho storm power outage , Georgetown Bagelry has prevailed. But a global pandemic wasn’t on our list of things to prepare for. And yet, our agility and transparency served us well. We couldn’t do it without our amazing team and our awesome customers — loyal as always!

As we embark on a new year, I am more grateful than ever to be apart of this incredible community as we continue to work together, stay safe and provide the best darn bagels in the DC area. It truly has been a labor of love, peace and creativity.

Over the summer — from Mother’s Day until the end of June — Georgetown Bagelry’s owner and CEO, Mary Beall Adler, biked across country , raising money for globalbike , a non-profit that helps transform lives and communities with the power of bikes. During her cross-country journey, alongside the Missouri border, she ran into a man with a flat tire, who needed assistance. Mary stopped to help him, and they parted ways. A few weeks later, Mary received a very sweet card from the man, Dave, thanking her for her kindness.

This Mother’s Day, entrepreneur Mary Beall Adler, owner of Georgetown Bagelry for more than 25 years, will hit the road on a cross-country bike tour to raise money for globalbike, inc., a nonprofit connecting Tanzanian women to vital resources through bicycles.

An avid cyclist and mother of six in a blended family, Adler will undertake this ride to help women around the world achieve health, happiness and success.

“I know firsthand how difficult it is to achieve any measure of success when the deck is stacked against you,” Adler says. “This cross-country ride is a daunting task, but I can’t wait to get started because I know I’m riding for something great: helping women rise out of poverty and make a better life for themselves by the simple act of providing them with bicycles.”

Adler faced her own share of personal and financial difficulties to get where she is today, as recounted in her book, Who Scooped My Bagel: One Woman’s Story of Love, Loss and Success (Advantage Media Group, 2013). Against all odds and without any formal business training, she took the failing Georgetown Bagelry and made it a resounding success. It is now widely regarded as the best bagel bakery south of New York City, and Adler has leveraged her expertise to become an in-demand women’s leadership authority and creativity coach to other professionals.

Adler and her team of 20 cyclists plan to set out this Mother’s Day, May 8, on a Cervélo road bike ride covering 3,415 miles across 14 states.

“globalbike combines everything great about group cycling and helps raise women out of poverty by connecting them to resources we take for granted in the U.S. – vital things like healthcare, education and even business opportunities,” says Adler, who has trained for several months to tackle the globalbike challenge.

Adler hopes to inspire other women to face their fears head on and unapologetically chase their dreams, whether on a bike or not.

We were surprised and delighted to read last Thursday in the Washington Post that Ivanka Trump’s favorite places in D.C. included Georgetown Bagelry. Trump, who attended college at Georgetown University and is spearheading the remodeling of the Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue into D.C.’s first Trump hotel, told the Reliable Source that when she lived in Georgetown, Georgetown Bagelry was one of her favorite places to eat.

“I absolutely loved it there. They had some of the greatest pizza bagels I’d ever had, and this is coming from a New Yorker.”

We can only hope that Ms. Trump can find time to stop by our Bethesda store soon so she can revisit with us and enjoy a pizza bagel!

Georgetown Bagelry is thrilled to have made WTOP News’ list of where to find the best bagels in the D.C. Area . The article, which was published this week, includes some fun facts about GtownBagel. For instance, did you know that the Bagelry:

turns out between 400 and 450 dozen bagels a day
makes 18 varieties of bagels each day, including black and white bagels. All of the bagels are boiled and baked in the back of the store.
